How many insect species are there?
4-6 million.
Prior to the publication of a comprehensive study in a 2002 Nature issue, the total of insect species was thought to be over 30 million. However, this study argues that the actual number of species is substantially lower: from 4 to 6 million. This data is based on the premise that insect feeding is not specialized on a single plant species, but on plant families.
