How many Indian states are there?
Composed of 28 states and 7 union territories, India is the world’s second most populated country, following China. With an entire population of approximately 1.21 billion as of 2011, India holds 2.4% of the global land surface area, occupying 17.5% of the world’s population.
Among these, the highest populated Indian states are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Bihar; while the top three populated union territories are Chandigarh, National Capital Territory of Delhi, and Puducherry. Moreover, the eastern and western coastal regions of Deccan plateau are also the compressed Indian regions when it comes to population; while the northern and north-eastern states along the Himalayas have lesser inhabitants because of higher physical obstacles.
