How many IDPs are there?

28.8 million

Not too many people realize that about two-thirds of the world’s f uprooted people are displaced within their own country. They are known as internally displaced people (IDP).   According to the figures released by the Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), there were 28.8 million IDPs around the world in 2012.  This is a real phenomenon.  Keep in mind that the global number of IDPs has significantly increased from a total of around 17 million in 1997.  Most of the cases, these persons were displaced by conflict, generalized violence and human rights violations.  Needless to say, the conflicts in Syria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo were the main cause for new displacements.
