How many Hikikomori are there in Japan?

700000

Not too many people know that Hikikomori is a Japanese term which refers to the phenomenon of reclusive adolescents or adults who withdraw from social life.  The main idea is that these persons have extreme degrees of isolation and confinement.  Statistics show that approximately 700000 persons in Japan can be considered Hikikomori.  The average age is 31 years old.  Unfortunately, statistics do not look too good at all.  In fact, the government estimates 1.55 million people to be on the verge of becoming hikikomori.  Needless to say, specialists consider that hikikomori adolescents are hidden away and their parents are often reluctant to talk about the problem.
