High-definition television broadcasts began around November 1998 when HDTV sets became available to consumers. The first public HDTV broadcast was of the space shuttle Discovery launch and John Glenn’s return to space. The first major sporting event broadcasted in HD was the 34th Super Bowl on January 30, 2000. Subsequently, satellite television companies in the United States began to carry HD programming in 2002.
