How many GM dealers are there in the United States?

3,600 dealers

General Motors Corporation (GMC) had more than 6,000 dealers in the United States before filing for bankruptcy in 2009. To survive, General Motors had to reduce the number of dealerships to 3,600.

However, more than 1,000 dealers challenged GM’s decision, and as a response, the US congress has begun an arbitration process that will reinstate more than half of the terminated dealerships. When the arbitration process concludes, General Motors could have close to 5,000 dealers in the US.

GM had about 6,000 dealers when we filed Chapter 11 in June 2009. As part of our restructuring, we sent participation agreements to about 4,100 dealers. About 1,100 dealers filed arbitration claims to be reinstated in January, 2010. We currently have about 5,300 active dealers. After the arbitration process concludes this July, we believe we will have between 5,300 and 4,100 active dealers.
