How many Giant Pandas are alive in the world?

Giant pandas have become national icons in China. To date, there are 239 giant pandas bred in captivity, according to a 2007 news report in a Chinese online news journal. This number includes 27 pandas living outside China, including 12 in the United States, 8 in Japan, 2 in Thailand, 3 in Austria, and 2 in Spain.

The same article reported that around 1,590 giant pandas are living in the wild. However, researchers in China and the United Kingdom have pegged the number at 2,00 to 3,000 wild pandas based on analyzing DNA from panda droppings.
