There are at least 30,000 active gangs in the United States as of the end of April 2008. This is according to the Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS) of the US Department of Justice. The COPS bases this number on estimates from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, which also estimates a total of about 800,000 gang members spread out in 2,500 communities nationwide.
