How many galaxies are there in the observable universe?

More than 170 billion.

There is  estimated to be more than 170 billion galaxies in the observable universe. This is based on a study by Richard Gott attempting to map the universe which was published in the Astrophysical Journal in May 2005. As telescopes become more powerful, the number of galaxies that can be observed by man is very likely to increase.
