How many Everest summits have been successfully undertaken?
As of the end of May 2008, there have been a total of 4,109 successful summits or ascents to Mt. Everest made by 2,700 different individuals. The first recorded ascent to Mt. Everest was made by New Zealander Edmund Percival Hillary with Indian Tenzing Norgay on May 29, 1953. The last summit was on May 28, 2008, made by Mike Browder of the U.S. with Nepali guides Lhakpa Gelu II and Pasang Gelu I. This is according to a news report published in the BBC on May 21, 2009.
