Since 2000, the United States Census Bureau officially recognizes 6 ethnic groups that make up the US population. These are white, black or African American, Asian, American Indian and Alaskan native, native Hawaiian and other Pacific islander, and persons of 2 or more races. Hispanic origin is seen by the Bureau as separate from race.
