How many English speakers are there in the world?
There are 328 million speakers worldwide having English as their first language. This is according to the Summer Institute of Linguistic’â„¢s 16th edition of the World Ethnologue published in 2009. English is the third largest language in terms of number of first-language speakers. It is first in terms of the number of countries that speak the language, with 112 English-speaking countries worldwide. This number does not include persons who speak English as a second or third language, and estimates place it at about 600 million worldwide.
