How many elderly are there in America?

12.9% of the US population

It is extremely interesting to know the fact that the older population represented 39.6 million in 2009.  Needless to say, this signifies they represented 12.9% of the U.S. population.  Moreover, this means that about one in every eight Americans is old.  Statistics show that by 2030, there will be about 72.1 million older persons, more than twice their number in 2000.   Keep in mind that this population is expected to grow in the next years.  Old people will represent 19% of the population by 2030.  This is definitely something.

What age is considered “old”? How can you publish a statistic on “old” without specifying the age at which one becomes old.
