Not too many people know that EGF stands for epidermal growth factor.  EGF is important in regulating the proliferation of mammary epithelial cells. The total number of EGF receptors per cell of different cell lines varies from 1.6 × 10³sites/cell (for AlAb 496) to 1.5 × 10⁶ sites/cell (for BT-20).  It is important to know that EGF receptors are not present in all human breast cancer cell lines.  EGF receptor is a member of the ErbB family of receptors.  This family contains:  EGFR (ErbB-1), HER2/c-neu (ErbB-2), Her 3 (ErbB-3) and Her 4 (ErbB-4).
