Every year about 100 to 150 earthquakes are felt in the state of California. Most of these are minor non-damaging earthquakes, but each year 3 to 4 moderate earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater occur. This is according to the California Geologic Survey. The U.S. Geologic Survey lists 116 major earthquakes to have occurred since 1812.
