How many divorces were there in the United States in 2009?
Less than in 2008.
Although no definite statistics on the number of divorces in 2009 in the U.S. are available, it has been found to decline in large part due to the economic recession. This is according to the study The State of Our Unions, Marriage in America 2009 published by the National Marriage Project of the University of Virginia. The study cites reports from the Wall Street Journal saying that there were 14% less divorce filings in New York and 9% less in Los Angeles. It also cites a survey conducted on divorce lawyers of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers that found a 40% drop in divorce filings.
