The exact number of closet atheists is not known.  For example, in the United States many people are not tolerant when it comes to atheists.  It will be difficult for someone to state that he or she was atheist without having to face discrimination.  Anyway, atheists are far more numerous than most people realize.  The main idea is that fewer and fewer people feel intimidated by religion.  It is important to know that coming out as an atheist can cost you your friends, your job, and even your family.
