A total of 140 banks failed in the United States in 2009. This is according to the Failed Bank List of the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The first bank failures occurred in January 16, 2009 with the Bank of Clark County in Vancouver and the National Bank of Commerce in Berkeley. The largest bank failure occurred with Colonial Bank in Montgomery, with assets of $25 billion at the time of failure.
