How many ants are there in the world?

10,000,000,000,000,000 individual ants alive on Earth at any given time

Believe it or not, in their Pulitzer-prize winning book The Ants, researchers Bert Hölldobler and Edward O. Wilson estimate that there are upwards of 10,000,000,000,000,000 individual ants alive on Earth at any given time.  This is definitely something.  It is also interesting to know the fact that ants are as old as the dinosaurs.  Not too many people know the fact that with the exception of Antarctica, the Arctic, and a handful of islands, aunts are everywhere.  Do not forget the fact that in some regions of the world, ants can account for over a quarter of the animal biomass.
