How many wives did Akbar the Great have?
Around 300.
It is believed in throughout his life Akbar the Great married about 300 times to cement politically advantageous alliances for the sake of the Mughal empire. His first marriage was to the Rajput princess Jodhaa Bai. Although the Quran only permitted at most 4 wives, Akbar the Great sought justification by using the Muslim concept of the Mutta marriage, which allows an unrestricted number of marriages with women of other religions. It is also believed that Akbar kept a harem of thousands of women. All these are stated in the 2002 book, ‘Å“A Brief history of the Great Moghuls’, by Bamber Gascoigne.
