How many Afghan civilians have died in the Afghanistan war?

At least 10,172 to 12,969.

At end of 2009, reports on number of direct civilian deaths in Afghanistan since the start of the 2001 war ranged from 10,172 to 12,969. This is gathered from yearly reports published by the Human Rights Watch, the Associated Press, the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission, and the Afghanistan Rights Monitor. The actual number is expected to be far greater than reported, as this does not include civilian deaths arising indirectly from the war (i.e., hunger, sickness). No data was also available for civilian deaths for the year 2004.
