How many Justice of the Peace Courts does Texas have?

It depends on the population of each county.

Justice of the Peace Court (also known as the JP court or Justice Court) is the lowest court in Texas. Each county has its own JP court. Section 18 of Article 5 focuses on the number of Justice Courts each county can have. It is decided according to the population of that county.

a)      If the population of a county is less than 18,000, then it has one JP.

b)      It the population is more than 18,000 but less than 50,000, it can have a minimum of 2 JP precincts.

c)       If the population is more than 50,000, then it can have a minimum of 4 JP precincts.

d)      If the population is more than 150,000 and if it a city in that county has a population of at least 18,000, then that precinct has 2 JP’s.
