Ways to prevent Pregnancy

As per statistics, the population about 200 years ago was less than 1 billion. Currently, the world houses a whooping population of about 7 billion people. Based on a recent study, it was estimated that the rate of population growth had already reached its peak in 1964 with a growth rate that measured about 2.3%.
With this escalating rise in population, major resources have been depleted and there has been serious concern regarding the extinction of resources with any further increase in the number of humans. Owing to this concern, most countries around the globe decided to adopt and advocate the need to control population.
Hence stemmed the “We two, ours two” and recently, the “We two, ours one” plan.
As people are being educated about the need to control population growth it is also best that all couples are aware of various methods to prevent pregnancy. The following points given elucidate the 10 best methods to prevent pregnancy:

1. Having protected copulation.
Condoms for men and diaphragms for women are the two most commonly used protection. These are extremely safe but are only about 95% effective. Broken condoms and diaphragms can result in pregnancy. They also help prevent contraction of STIs.

2. Contraceptive pills.
Regular birth control pills help prevent pregnancy most effectively. These work by changing hormone levels of the woman thus preventing fertilization of the egg and sperm. They should however be taken regularly following periodic cycles.

3. Surgical procedures such as vasectomy and tubectomy.
Vasectomy for men and tubectomy for women are the permanent solutions to prevent pregnancy. Vasectomy involves ligation of the vas deferens in men that is responsible for carrying the sperms, while tubectomy involves ligation of the fallopian tubules in women.

4. Natural abstinence.
It is believed that a woman is infertile while menstruation and hence cannot get pregnant during this time. While natural abstinence during infertile periods can be followed, it is not an entirely effective contraceptive method as sometimes it is possible to get pregnant as a sperm is alive in the body for about 5 days.

5. The emergency contraception
An emergency contraception can be taken to prevent pregnancy due to unprotected copulation. It involves taking medication within 72 hours of the act.

6. Birth control implants.
Birth control implants such as implanon and nexon are widely used stick like materials that are injected into the woman’s skin. It works by producing hormones that prevent fertilization of egg and sperm. It is an extremely effective and safe method.

7. Intra uterine devices.
Intra uterine devices such as the Copper Ts are inserted within a woman’s uterus. These work by blocking the passage of sperms and hence their fertilization with the egg In the woman’s body.

8. Birth control patches.
Birth control patches are thin plastic patches that are stuck over the woman’s skin. These work by producing hormones that alter hormone levels thus preventing fertilization of egg and sperm. They are extremely effective and safe and hence commonly used.

9. Birth control shots.
Birth control shots involve the injection of hormones such as progestin that prevent pregnancy by making cervical mucus thicker and hence preventing egg from leaving ovaries and sperm meeting the egg.

10. Spermicides.
Spermicides are chemicals that prevent movement of sperms inside the uterus. These are inserted deep into the vagina and work by blocking the cervix and also preventing motion of sperms.
