An acute respiratory infection of the lungs, this disorder is characterized by the swelling up of alveoli due to accumulation of pus and fluid. As a result, oxygen intake is limited and breathing becomes very painful.
While not very dangerous, severe causes of pneumonia may prove to be fatal. Here are a few treatments to prevent this disorder from being lethal.

1. Home Remedies to treat pneumonia.
People suffering from pneumonia are generally advised to drink plenty of water and take a lot of rest. They are encouraged against doing any kind of household chores, till their condition improves. Fluids are a must, as they help prevent dehydration.

2. Ayurvedic treatments.
Ayurvedic treatments generally involve the use of natural herbs and spices to cure disorders. Pneumonia may be treated by using black tea and fenugreek seeds. A mixture of honey, salt, sesame seeds and flax seeds may also be helpful in treating this respiratory disorder.

3. Antibiotics to treat bacterial pneumonia.
Pneumonia may be caused due to bacteria or viruses that may have lodged itself in the respiratory system of the human body. In cases of infection by bacteria, Antibiotics may be prescribed as part of treatment.

4. Treatment of pneumonia caused due to an inhaled object.
Inhaling substances such as food into your lungs may lead to inflammations at the site resulting in aspiration pneumonia. Treatment in such cases involve getting the respiratory tract checked for blockage and getting the substance removed by the doctor.

5. Respiratory Therapy.
Respiration therapy is useful in removing mucus from the lungs. This method of treatment involves breathing exercises along with occasional spirometry to check the breathing patterns and capabilities of the lungs.

6. Drugs to reduce symptoms.
Often, apart from the regular breathing difficulty, pneumonia may also result in fever that may worsen the patient’s condition. Medications for fever such as aspirin might help reduce these symptoms and aid in quicker recovery. It is however advised to consult a doctor before taking any medicine.

7. Antiviral treatment.
In cases where pneumonia is caused due to a viral infection, antiviral medications may be required. These are prescribed by the doctor depending on the severity of infection and treatment goes on for about 1-3 weeks.

8. Hospitalization in cases of severe pneumonia.
In very severe cases, when breathing becomes extremely difficult, patients diagnosed with pneumonia may have to be admitted in the intensive care unit for hospitalization. Breathing may be regulated by use of ventilators and patients may be subjected to periodic drips to keep their glucose levels high which may otherwise drop down making them weak.

9. Oxygen therapy.
Patients may also be given general oxygen therapy in some case. This method of treatment involves placing a mask supplying oxygen over the face of the person suffering from the disorder.

10. Anti-inflammatory drugs and cough syrup.
Pneumonia may result in inflammation of the air pathway and lungs which have to be controlled by use of anti-inflammatory drugs. Such conditions may cause irritation of the throat. Cough syrups may thus be administered to keep the patient comfortable.
