Treatment for bronchitis

When I was in the fifth grade, our teacher once told our class that 200 years hence, the kids of that generation would walk up to their older generation with a question that would lead to a conversation as follows:
Kid of future generation: Mom, what’s a tree?

Older generation: Uh..Well, a tree is a huge, fully grown plant with barks and leaves.
Kid of that generation: Uh huh. Are there pictures of these things online?

*Googles images of trees* Woah! Do these things even exist anymore?
Older generation: Not exactly, but there is one that has been cryogenically preserved in a museum 50 miles from here. Want to go check it out?

Our teacher swore to us that those kids would look at tress with awe just as we do now at dinosaurs. Back then, this cracked me up, but right now it scares me to think that she may have been right!

The number of trees that have been cut down to make space for high raised buildings is indeed uncountable. I would present to you the statistics but I choose not to do so as it would only result in a heart condition.

The pollution that has resulted has brought about innumerous pulmonary diseases that have plagued the planet following the ‘inhumane’ acts of deforestation. Bronchitis is one such common pulmonary disorder that affects all regardless of age.

So here’s 10 methods of treatment that might help get rid of the irritable disorder that most people seem to be affected by today.

1. Conventional methods used to treat bronchitis.
In cases of acute bronchitis, the remedial treatments may be pretty simple often involving simple measures such as protecting one’s self from dust, drinking a lot of fluids, eating a healthy diet and taking cough syrup.

2. Oral steroids used as therapy.

Oral steroids administered to patients diagnosed with bronchitis helps curtail the inflammation that occurs. Bronchial swelling and secretions are thus reduced, freeing the passageway allowing entry of air into the lungs.
Inhaled steroids are more often used owing to lesser side effects post consumption.

3. Role of antibiotics in treating bronchitis.

Antibiotics are known for their toxic action against bacteria. While the cause for bronchitis is sometimes due to the effects of bacteria, most often bronchitis is caused due to viral reactions.
In cases of viral infections, antibiotics are rendered useless.

4. Bronchodilators are used to treat acute bronchitis.

It has been identified by doctors and researchers that acute bronchitis shares similar pulmonary restricting symptoms as asthma. Bronchodilators are thus used to relieve discomfort due to acute bronchitis and aid in gradual recovery.

5. Oxygen therapy to relieve blocked air passage.
In cases of chronic bronchitis, when the normal process of breathing becomes a difficult task to accomplish for the affected patient, oxygen therapy may be suggested. This method of treatment involves supplying oxygen from a cylinder through a face mask or cannula thus allowing oxygen to reach the lungs.

6. Pulmonary rehabilitation for chronic bronchitis.
Pulmonary rehabilitation involves a set of exercises taught to patients suffering from chronic bronchitis to help enhance their physical fitness. These education programs also teach patients how to manage their pulmonary disease along with teaching them different breathing exercises to help them feel better.

7. Cough suppressants to reduce the pain.
Cough suppressants are generally given to patients with bronchitis as temporary relief. It does not help cure the pulmonary infection, but helps reduce pain due to continuous coughing.

8. Smoking and its effects on the pulmonary system.
Smoking is a well-known danger to the pulmonary system of the body. People with bronchitis are advised to quit smoking as early as possible as it may worsen their condition. People without pulmonary disorders are also advised to quit smoking as it may cause the onset of a pulmonary disorder in the body.

9. Vaccination against viruses.
While most treatment methods are administered post infection, vaccinations help prevent contracting a disorder. These may be administered from time to time to strengthen the body’s immune system against a particular virus or infection.

10. General Hygiene- the best preventive and method of treatment.
Most pulmonary disorders are caused due to bacteria, viruses and allergens. The best way to avoid falling ill, is to maintain general hygiene at all times. Washing hands and protecting one’s self from affected persons can help reduce the risk of contracting a disease by an exponential gradient.
