Today, everyone is familiar with various types of espresso drinks. These coffee beverages are refreshing and invigorating as well. But are all the beverages the same? Naturally not. Each one has its own characteristics and names. The differences are really unknown to most coffee drinkers. But one must make sure that the beverage that he/she is drinking is good for him/her. The basic ingredients are often the same like milk and espresso. Other ingredients are different that makes every drink so unique and special. The most popular varieties are latte and cappuccino.

Fact 1 What Is Latte

Latte is a common Italian coffee drink. The original Italian word is “Cafelatte” meaning milk coffee. The English word Latte has been derived from the Italian word and is now commonly used worldwide. The preparation of latte is distinct from other coffee beverages. It can be made from all kinds of coffee. It is also not always necessary to use coffee only to make latte. Tea, cocoa, matcha or matte can also be used. Normally, a cup of latte contains 2/3 steamed milk and 1/3 espresso with a layer of foamed milk on the top. Original Italian latte does not have foamed milk as an ingredient.

Fact 2 What Is Cappuccino

Cappuccino is an Italian coffee beverage. Those who prepare it the traditional way, use hot milk, espresso, and steamed milk-foam. This drink has come down from the Austrians in the early part of the 19th century. It was known as Kapuziner in Austria. The word denotes a drink that is made of coffee, spices, cream, and sugar. Cappuccino is the Italian name for Kapuziner. Others are of the opinion that, in 1901, Cappuccino was first prepared in Milan when the expresso machine was first invented by Luigi Bezzera. However, the modern version of cappuccino was started in Northern Italy at the end of 1930s. It is a mixture of coffee and steamed milk.

Fact 3 Differences Between Latte And Cappuccino

There are some differences between latte and cappuccino which we will discuss now.

  1. Use of latte in different countries: – In Italy, latte is prepared at home with hot milk and coffee. In The U.S.A., it is made of espresso coffee and steamed milk. It is available mostly in coffee houses and is not consumed during breakfast as in Italian homes.
  2. Difference in the quantity of milk: – Latte contains more of textured or steamed milk as compared to cappuccino that uses less milk.
  3. Amount of Coffee used: – Latte contains more of milk and less of coffee for which it is so popular. Other flavors are also used and the frothed milk offers a unique look to the beverage. On the other hand, cappuccino is made from hot milk, espresso blend coffee and steamed milk. The amount of coffee used is more than latte.
  4. The difference in ratio: – The ratio of milk, coffee, etc. in latte is 1/6 espresso, 4/6 steamed milk and 1/6 foamed milk. It is purely based on milk. Cappuccino contains 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk and 1/3 foamed milk. The beverage is toned down by using milk. But the taste of coffee is rich and bold.
  5. Difference in serving style: – Latte is often served in porcelain cups so that the heat is retained for longer time. Metal cups are rarely used to serve these beverages as the taste of latte cannot be enjoyed when cold. Cappuccino is however, served in a glass on a saucer accompanied by a napkin. It is the original Italian style of serving cappuccino to guests.
