Respiration is one of the most important processes that enable living beings to stay alive. Similarly, to stay healthy and fit, it is important to do exercises. There are various forms of exercises that offer different types of results. There are two types of respiratory system and two types of exercise forms like aerobic and anaerobic.
Fact 1 Meaning Of Aerobic And Anaerobic
The word aerobic literally means “with oxygen” and anaerobic means “without oxygen”. Both aerobic and anaerobic respiration are the two forms of cellular respiration. Respiration is a process of eliminating wastes and generating energy. This is done by two ways namely with oxygen known as aerobic and without using oxygen called anaerobic respiration.
Fact 2 Difference Between Aerobic And Anaerobic Respiration
- The cells contain oxygen and this oxygen is used by the body to generate energy in the form of ATP. The by-products are carbon-dioxide and water. This is known as aerobic respiration. However, in the absence of oxygen also, energy is produced by the cells which is termed as anaerobic respiration.
- There is difference in the amount of energy produced between aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Aerobic respiration generate more ATP molecules as compared to anaerobic respiration.
- Difference in the by-products – carbon-dioxide and water being the by-products of aerobic respiration, the body easily eliminates them. But lactic acid is the by-product of anaerobic respiration which occurs during intense workouts. This cannot be thrown out of the body. It accumulates in the muscles causing cramps and muscle-pulls.
- Stages of aerobic respiration are Glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and Electron Transport Chain. While the stages involved in anaerobic respiration are Glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and Electron Transport Chain.
- Reactants in aerobic exercises are glucose and oxygen as compared to anaerobic respiration that has glucose and electron acceptor but not oxygen.
- Site of reactions are Cytoplasm and mitochondria in case of both aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration.
- The combustion process is complete in aerobic respiration but incomplete in anaerobic respiration.

Exercises and fitness workouts are important for every living being to maintain health. Here also we notice differences in the method of using oxygen while performing the exercises.
- Aerobic exercises utilize the oxygen in the cells to burn fat as well as carbohydrates and in the process produce energy. Walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, and others involve aerobic exercises. Anaerobic exercises like intense workouts and strenuous exercises such as weight-lifting, sprints, climbing stairs etc., where you become breathless for a few seconds.

Aerobic exercises have proved to be effective in strengthening the heart, reducing the chances of cardiac diseases, improving red blood cells that help in distributing oxygen throughout the body. It helps to reduce weight especially when combined with appropriate diet. Aerobic exercises help in maintaining blood pressure level, controlling diabetes as well as certain types of cancer, boosts the immunity system and increases energy and stamina. Another unique feature of aerobic exercises is that it is combined with rhythmic beats and music that make exercise sessions more enjoyable and leads to better advantages.
Anaerobic exercises offer quite a few benefits. They are namely improving bone health and reducing chances of osteoporosis. It also strengthens the ligaments and tendons and functioning of the joints. Cardiac functions and elevation of good cholesterol are some of the benefits of anaerobic exercises.
Just as life is impossible without oxygen, similarly exercises and fitness workouts are absolutely important for maintaining health. Oxygen is required at every step of life. Hence aerobic respiration and aerobic exercises are most common. However, anaerobic exercises too have their advantages when performed under the direction of expert trainers.
