Introduction:

Grapes are often known as the queen of fruits is said to have a long history with the fruit starting to be cultivated around 8000 years ago. The various ways in which the fruit can be consumed, the texture, the varieties, the taste and the easy portability of the fruit all make it one of the most popular fruits among the larger sections of the society. Not only are these fruits very tasty they come loaded with a host of health benefits too.

Grapes are low calorie and low glycemic index foods. They can be safely consumed after the fruits are carefully washed to remove the pesticide residues. Grapes are generally stored in the refrigerator.

Anti-Cancer Properties: Polyphenols are anti oxidants which are present in grapes which help in reducing the risks of different types of cancer such as esophageal, lung, mouth, pharynx, endometrial, pancreatic, prostate and colon.

Use of Resveratrol in Grapes: Another polyphenol which is present in the skin of red grapes is resveratrol which helps in maintaining a healthy heart by reducing the risk of cardio vascular disease through reduced platelet build up. This polyphenol also offers other benefits such as protection against diabetic neuropathy and retinopathy (a condition where diabetes affects the nerves and eyes respectively), treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, reduction in the menopausal symptoms such as mood swings and hot flashes. Resveratrol plays a significant role in increasing the longevity of the person.

Grapes also contain high amounts of potassium which is said to have beneficial effects in reducing stroke, prevents loss of muscle mass and prevents risks of kidney stones. Potassium levels in grapes are also helpful in reducing the blood pressure of a person.
