Introduction: Craniosacral therapy (CST) was the brain child of Osteopathic Physician John E. Upledger a professor of biomechanics. The therapy was formulated after a strenuous research and testing between the years 1975 to 1983 by Upledger in the Michigan State University.

What is CST?

This is a non invasive bodywork similar to a massage where compression or stress are relived from the bones of the head, spinal column and sacrum thus reducing pain and symptoms of various conditions. The therapist tries to bring back the bones and soft tissues of the nervous system to their original position free from stress using a soft touch which exerts a pressure no greater than 5gms.

The therapy targets the craniosacral system which is the membranes and fluids that surround the brain and spinal cord. Everyday stress and strain of the body causes body tissues to tighten or contract. This in turn exerts a negative effect on the craniosacral system. As a consequence the craniosacral system causes certain restrictions or stress on the brain and spinal cord resulting in a reduced performance of the nervous system and other systems which it controls.

A CST practitioner finds such restrictions by feeling with his hands the different parts of the body for the free flow of the cerebrospinal fluid in and around the brain and spinal cord. These restrictions are released using soft touches thus helping the body to relive itself from various problems. The duration of the sessions and the number of sessions will vary from person to person and would be based on the condition to be addressed.

Benefits of CST:

Treating the Person as a Whole: CST acts upon the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of a person as a complete package and not individually. This helps in achieving the desired results effectively.

The therapy can be carried out on all age groups right from infants to the elderly. Pregnant ladies who undergo CST have a smoother and easier pregnancy. Also a optimum environment for the growing fetus is developed.

Beneficial for Babies: Since the therapy is so gentle it can be carried out on babies too. It is very helpful to treat poor sleep patterns and restlessness in babies. Also the therapy in such a tender age would pave way for a healthy pattern of growth and development in the future.

Feeling of harmony: The CST session guarantees a variety of calming harmonious feelings and experiences. Increased energy levels, a sense of balance, calm and in general a sense of relaxation and peace are common experiences for a person undergoing CST.

CST offers relief from various disorders and diseases: The following are some of the disorders which can be effectively treated with CST. CST can be safely used to alleviate symptoms and treat disorders such as migraines, headaches, pains of neck and back, Stress, orthopedic problems, behavioral and learning disabilities such as autism, ADD/ADHD, problems associated with the nervous system, motor control and coordination, Fibromyalgia, TMJ syndrome, temporomandibular joint disorder and many more. The conditions can vary from simple pains to chronic diseases.

Conclusion: CST is recognized as one of the most subtle and gentle therapies though it is considered as a powerful tool to relive the body of numerous symptoms and diseases. The highlight of the therapy is that it aims to utilize and tap the inherent healing capacities of our body thus preparing the healing forces of the body to overcome the underlying causes for the diseases. The therapy works well on most of the health issues.
