Famous Yale Alumni Actors

Alumni are the male, or a combination of male and female, graduates of a school, college, or university. In some countries, alternate terms like ‘old boy’ or ‘former students’ are used. Yale University, located in New Haven, Connecticut, was founded in 1701 and currently covers an area of 837 acres, including Yale Golf Course. Its motto is ‘Light and Truth’ Lux Et Veritas in Latin. Its academic staff exceeds 3,600, and the number of students is around 12,000. Yales’ alumni are great men from different spheres of life including; politics, entertainment media, sports, business, and many other fields. Quite a few of them rose to the highest achievable position in America, like the 41st U.S. President George H. W. Bush, the 42nd U.S. President William Clinton, and the 43rd U.S. President George W. Bush, and this does not exclude the other Yalies who were U.S. Presidents. Among the Yale alumni are also great film and television actors, and they are more well-known than most of the others due to their direct exposure to electronic media.

1. Paul Newman

Paul Newman was born to Theresa and Arthur Sigmund Newman in Shaker Heights, Ohio on January 26, 1925 and died in Westport, Connecticut on September 26, 2008 at the age of 83. He was interested in theater right since his childhood, and at the age of seven played in a school production of Robin Hood. He attended the Yale School of Drama for one year before moving to New York City to study at the Actors Studio. He was a successful actor and won many awards including an Academy Award for Best Actor in appreciation of his outstanding performance in the 1986 movie The Color of Money. He had also been nominated for three Golden Globe Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and an Emmy Award.

Sam Waterston was born to Alice Tucker and George Chychele Waterston in Cambridge, Massachusetts on November 15, 1940. He attended Brook School in North Andover, Massachusetts and Groton School, Groton, also in Massachusetts. In 1958, having earned a scholarship, he entered the Yale University and graduated from it in 1962. He is well-known for his Academy Award-winning nomination performance of Sydney Schanberg in the 1984 movie The Killing Fields. He has been nominated for many awards including a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his outstanding performance as Jack McCoy on the NBC television series Law & Order. He was also nominated for many other Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA, and Emmy Awards. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010.

Sorrell Booke was born in Buffalo, New York, U.S. on January 4, 1930 and died in Sherman Oaks, California, on February 11, 1994 at the age of 64. He graduated from Yale and Columbia universities. He was fluent in five languages including Japanese. He came to Holly wood through his diploma in drama from Yale University He is best known for role as Boss Hogg in the television show The Dukes of Hazard.  He also appeared in Mission: Impossible. He earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the TV series Dr. Kildare.

Vincent Price was born to Marguerite Cobb and Vincent Leonard Price, Sr. in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S., on May 27, 1911 and died in Los Angeles, California on October 25, 1993 at the age of 82 years. He was a famous American actor known for his distinguished voice and serio-comic performance. He attended St. Louis Country Day School and received his further education in art history and fine art at Yale. He was interested in theatre since 1930 but debuted in 1935.  He played the role of Prince Albert Victor in the play Victoria Regina starring against Helen Hayes who played Queen Victo.

Willie Garson was born in Highland Park, New Jersey, U.S., on February 20, 1964. He has played minor roles in around 50 movies, but he is best known for his role as Stanford Batch in the HBO series Sex and the City. He attended Camp Wekeela in Hartford, Maine and graduated from Wesleyan University. He also attended Yale Drama School. Not excluding the others, his television appearances include: Mr. Belvedere, Coach, Quantum Leap, Monk, Boy Meets World, Star Trek Voyager, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Friends and many others. Since 2009, he has been playing the role of Mozzie in the USA Network series White Collar.

Lance Reddick was born in Baltimore, Maryland on December 31, 1962. He attended Friends High School, Baltimore, Maryland, the Walden School, and the Eastman School of Music. He enrolled in the Yale School of Drama in 1991. In 2008, he joined ABC’s popular series Lost. In multiple episodes he played the role of Mathew Abbadon. He also played a prominent role in Fringe. He had also starred in Law & Order. In 2007, he appeared in a Cadillac advertisement on television.

Adam Richman was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 16, 1974. He is a well-known actor and television personality. He was host of Man vs. Food; a Travel Channel’s eating challenge program. Currently he is the host of Adam Richman’s Best Sandwiches in America. He received his master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama. He has appeared in Guiding Light, All My Children, and Law & Order: Trial by Jury. He has also appeared in many national TV advertisements.

8. Lloyd Kaufman

Lloyd Kaufman was born to Ruth and Stanley Lloyd Kaufman in New York City, New York, U.S., on December 30, 1945. He graduated from Yale University majoring in Chinese studies. George W. Bush and Oliver Stone were his classmates. He is an American film director and actor. He founded Troma Entertainment Film Studios. He is also on the Board of the Independent Film and Television Alliance. He spent the year 1996 in Chad working for USAID and, on returning to Yale, produced Robert Edelstein’s movie Rappaccini. He appeared in the movies Rocky and Terror Firmer. Kaufman has also appeared on the Discovery Channel series Oddities.

9. Bronson Pinchot

Bronson Alcott Pinchot was born to Rosina and Henry Pincho in New York, U.S., on May 20, 1959. He attended South Pasadena High School and stood first in his class. After that he went to the Yale University on a full scholarship. He is best known for his performance in the ABC sitcom Perfect Strangers as Balki Barttokomous. He appeared in several feature films including: Risky Business, Beverly Hills Cop, The First Wives Club, True Romance, Courage Under Fire, and It’s My Party. Justin played dual roles standing in for Bronson in The Perfect Stranger.

10. Stacy Keach

Stacy Keach was born to the actress Mary Cain and Walter Stacy Keach in Savannah, Georgia, U.S., on June 2, 1941. His brother James Keach is also an actor and TV director. Keach attended Van Nuys High School and graduated from the University of California, Berkley. He earned his M.F.A. at the Yale School of Drama. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Stacy Keach is noted for his dramatic roles, but he has also done educative narration work on PBS and the Discovery Channel. He has played as a comedian in the Fox sitcom Titus.

Conclusion:

Yale’s luminous alumni are beacons of light for the new entrants of the university, and they are a great inspiration for them. They wish to rise like them, while to these great alumni of Yale, the   days spent at Yale are nostalgic, and they wish that they were the same carefree, old, Yalies again.
