This list includes the top ten most popular and beloved trios in religious, musical, entertainment, and literary history. Some of them are real personalities who brought inspiration and lessons to our lives while others are fictitious characters that brought joy and entertainment to many of us.

1. The Three Wise Men

They are also known as The Three Kings. Guided by the Nativity star, they traveled from the East to Bethlehem to pay homage to the newborn Baby Jesus. They brought with them  gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Three Wise Men, namely Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar, are among the most endearing symbols of Christmas time. They are immortalized in numerous Christmas plays, movies, and even in the Nativity scenes being displayed in many Christian homes during the yuletide season. The feast day of The Three Wise Men is celebrated every January 6 and is called the Feast of Epiphany or ‘The Adoration of the Magi.’ This day also marks the end of the Christmas season.

2. Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, and Mark Antony

Their real-life love story is one of the most unforgettable and dramatic in history. Their saga dates back 48 years before Christ. Cleopatra, the powerful queen of Egypt, used her charm to seduce Julius Caesar, Rome’s ruler. However, Cleopatra later on had a passionate affair with Mark Antony, a high-ranking officer in Caesar’s army. After Caesar was assassinated, his nephew Octavius claimed inheritance to Rome’s throne. This led to a war between him and Cleopatra.  Antony, who led Cleopatra’s troops, killed himself after he and his group were overpowered by the Octavian troops. Cleopatra also committed suicide. She had herself bitten by a poisonous snake rather than face humiliation under Octavius’ rule.

3. Prince Charles, Lady Di, and Camilla

They are the most famous love triangle in current century. The world watched their love story unfold with unabated curiosity and interest. Prince Charles and Lady Di had a fairy tale wedding on July 29, 1981, only to end in a bitter divorce in 1996. The cause of the split was Camilla Parker-Bowles, Charles’ former lover before his marriage to Diana. Camilla is said to be Charles’ true love, but Buckingham Palace did not approve of Camilla’s background. Charles finally married Camilla several years after Diana died in a car accident in 1997.

They were the most famous musical trio in the 1970’s. Their kind of music heralded the Disco Era of the 70’s. The group was composed of real brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. The trio started their career in 1958 but became very popular from the 60’s and onward until Maurice’s unexpected death in 1953. It is said that their record sales reached more than 220 million which catapulted them as among the best-selling, musical artists in history.

These three, fictitious women spies were the darlings of the television world in the 1970’s. The original cast of this television show starred Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson. They captivated their fans with their chemistry, individual wit, charm, and sexy appeal.  The original Charlie’s Angels is considered as one of the most successful series as well as a classic in television history. A remake was done for the movies in 2000 and was followed with a sequel in 2003. However, the television remake in 2011 received unfavorable reviews and was canceled after a few episodes.

6. The Three Musketeers

They are the 17th century fictitious heroes in Alexander Dumas’s novel written in 1844. The Three Musketeers, namely Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, who were inseparable friends, made famous the motto ‘All for one and one for all.’ The novel The Three Musketeers revolves around the adventures of D’Artagnan and his friendship with the famous trio. Because of its popularity, the story has been produced into movies, television episodes, plays, comic books, and even into video games.

7. Harry, Ron, and Hermione

The seven fantasy novels written by J.K. Rowling revolved around the adventures of Harry and his best friends, Ron and Hermione, in the world of wizardry.  Fans of Harry Potter around the world watched with fondness as the trio grew from being lovable kids to young adults. Their personalities are different, but they complement each other. Harry has the admirable traits of a true hero and friend. Ron is seen as insecure and moody, but he is also cheerful with an easy-going nature. Hermione, the girl among the trio, is intelligent, competitive, and compassionate but with an awkward and pompous side. The Harry Potter series gained more popularity after they were produced into movies. The films starred Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Rupert Grint as Ron, and Emma Watson as Hermione.

8. King Arthur, Sir Lancelot, Queen Guinevere

Their love triangle is one of the most poignant and moving love stories in British history.  King Arthur was the legendary British king who ruled England between the 5th and 6th centuries.  He lived in a place called Camelot where he held meetings in his castle with his Knights of the Round Table. The Knights of the Round Table were composed of noblemen who had sworn to serve and protect their kingdom. However, the group’s greatness crumbled when Sir Lancelot, its most famous knight, and King Arthur’s beautiful wife, Queen Guinevere, fell in love. Their secret affair was discovered which led to the fall of Camelot.

9. Alvin, Simon, and Theodore

These lovable chipmunks, which were created by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. in 1958 as an animated singing group, have invaded all areas of entertainment. We hear their songs on the radio and watch them on television and in the movies.  They were given different personalities, but they look cute as a group.  Alvin is mischievous while Simon is intelligent, and Theodore is sensitive.  Dave, their guardian and friend, lives with the trio. Bagdasarian himself used his own voice in recording the chipmunks’ songs. He created the high-pitched voices by speeding up the playback of the music.

10. Peter, Paul, and Mary

Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers made up this most popular singing trio in the 1960’s. Their very successful singing career, which spanned 50 years, made them icons of the music industry. Their songs carry a universal appeal which made them famous worldwide. Some of their most popular hits are ‘Blowin’ in the Wind,’ ‘Lemon Tree,’ and ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane.’ The three separated in 1970 and embarked on their solo careers. They had several reunion performances since 1972 up to the time when Mary got ill with leukemia which led to her death in 2009. Peter and Paul continued to perform as a duo after Mary died.

Conclusion:

There is something unique when we think of a trio. In most cases, it connotes bonding and friendship. However, there are also instances when a trio could result in rivalry and conflict. It has fascinated us to know the struggles, triumphs, and failures of these famous characters.  Their stories teach us lessons that influence our thoughts and opinions. Many of these characters made our sometimes boring existence more enjoyable. For these reasons, these trios have managed to touch and enrich our lives.
