Many sisters have become famous in history for various reasons. Sets of sisters have often opted for the entertainment business and quite a few of them, from a lowly start, became famous celebrities. Other than in the show business, sets of sisters have been famous in the fields of sports, activism, and academics. Sister sets have also been mentioned in Greek mythology, such as the famous Helen of Troy and her lesser known twin sister Clytemnestra, who, after the Trojan War, beheaded her husband, King Agamemnon of Argos. Not only have sets of sister earned fame in history, but a few sister and brother sets have also been famous in history, such as Scholastica who was twin sister of St. Benedict of Nursia. There are sisters like Paris and Nikki Hilton and Venus and Serena Williams whom everyone knows in modern times. A few sisters had been famous but unluckily they were exploited for their physical oddities, like the Siamese twin sisters. They were made to appear on freak shows for the financial benefit of their patrons.

1. Kardashian Sisters

Kimberly Noel Kardashian was born to Robert Kardashian and Kris Kardashian on October 21, 1980 in Los Angeles, California, U.S. Kimberly Noel Kardashian is a famous American socialite and television personality. Along with her sisters Kourtney and Khloe, Kardashian owns the famous fashion boutique chain D-A-S-H. She is additionally involved in many other clothing lines and fragrances. Kardashian and her sisters also own their Khaos online store in Las Vegas, which includes made to order specialty gift items, dresses, and novelty souvenirs. The Kardashian sisters came into prominence in October 2007 after their E! Reality television series premiered, titled Keeping up with the Kardashians. The popular series was followed by spin-offs, Kourtney and Kim Take New York and Kourtney and Kim Take Miami. Kardashian was the highest earning reality star in 2010 with an estimated earning over $6 million. The sisters Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe wrote an autobiography titled Kardashian Konfidential. Soon after its release, it appeared on the New York Times’ Best Seller List.

2. Jenna and Barbara Bush

The twin sisters Jenna and Barbara Bush were born to the 43rd U.S. President George W. Bush and the former First Lady Laura Bush on November 25, 1981 at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, USA. Jenna and Barbara Bush are granddaughters of the 41st U.S. President George H. W. Bush and wife Barbara Bush, after whom the elder sister Barbara Pierce Welch Bush was named. Jenna Welch Bush Hager was named after her maternal grandmother, Jenna Hawkins Welch. Both the sisters attended the Hockaday School in Dallas. Along with participating in the Human Rights Campaign, Barbara Bush released a video calling on New York State to legalize same sex marriage, saying, ‘I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality’¦New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love.’

3. The Williams sisters

The Williams sisters were born to Richard Williams and Oracene Price. Venus Ebony Starr Williams was born on June 17, 1980 in Lynwood, California, while Serena Jameka Williams was born on September 26, 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan. Both the sisters are professional tennis players. Venus Williams is a seven times singles grand slam winner while Serena Williams is a fifteen times grand slam winner. Both were coached by their parents at an early age. They are noted opponents in the game and they have met in eight grand slam singles. Both sisters have the honor to be ranked by the Women’s Tennis Association at the World No.1 position. In 2001 they occupied the first and second positions in 2010 French Open. They have won four gold medals at the Summer Olympic Games.

4. The Lennon Sisters

The Lennon Sisters is an American vocal group, comprising of four sisters, Diane, Peggy, Kathy and Janet. Diane is the eldest sister, born on December 1, 1939 while Janet, born on June 15, 1946, is the youngest one. All of them were born in Los Angeles, California. The Sisters quartet debuted on television on the Christmas Eve 1955, on The Lawrence Welk Show, and they continued appearing on the show until 1968. After the marriage of Dianne, who left the group, it became a trio. Tonight, You Belong to Me was their first hit, and Sad Movies Make Me Cry charted number one in Japan. Lennon Sisters were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001.

5. The Pontani Sisters

The Pontani Sisters, sometimes also known as Angie Pontani and the World Famous Pontani Sisters, is a dance act comprising of the sisters, Angie Pontani, Tara Pontani, and Helen Pontani. The trio debuted in 1990 on The Flying Neutrinos. The sisters perform in a variety of styles and in fancy costumes, including ostrich feathers, tassels and fancy headdresses. Mostly they design their costumes by themselves. In 2002 the Show Business Weekly awarded them the title Best NY Based Dance Company, while they were honored with the title Best Super Hot Dancing Trio by the Village Voice in 2006. AOL.com awarded them the title of #1 Burlesque Attraction in the Nation, in 2006.

6. The Ross Sisters

The Ross Sisters were born to Charles Adolphus and Cordelia Ross in West Texas. They were dancers, who performed under the stage names Aggie Ross, Elmira Ross, and Maggie Ross, while their real names were Veda Victoria, Dixie Jewel and Betsy Ann Ross. Betsy Ann Ross was born on June 29, 1926 in Colorado City, Texas. Veda Victoria Ross was born on November 8, 1927, in Roscoe, Texas. Dixie Jewel Ross was born on August 9, 1929 in Loraine, Texas. The trio came into prominence in 1940s when they appeared prominently in the film Broadway Rhythm. They moved to Europe and appeared in Piccadilly Hayride. They recorded Five Minutes More, a song that was later on covered by Frank Sinatra.

7. The Andrews Sisters

The Andrews Sisters, a famous singing trio comprised of contralto LaVerne Sophia (born on July 6, 1911), soprano Maxine Angelyn (born on January 3, 1916) and mezzo-soprano Patricia Marie (born on February 16, 1918). They sold more than 75 million records during their career. Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy was one of their hit records sung in 1946. According to the Bloomberg writer Mark Schoifet, the Andrews Sisters were the most popular female vocal artists of the first half of the twentieth century. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1988.

8. The Atkins Sisters

The Atkins Sisters, Erica Atkins-Campbell (born on April 29, 1972) and Trecina Atkins-Campbell (born on May 2, 1974), formed a duo called Mary Mary. The name of the duo was inspired from Bible’s Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, and Mary Magdalene. Their debut album Thankful was certified platinum. They have also released three gold albums, Incredible, Mary Mary, and the Sound, which has charted number one on Billboard Top Gospel Albums. Their hit songs include Walking and Go Get It. In addition to many other awards, the Atkin sisters have received four Grammy Awards.

9. The Olsen Sisters

Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Fuller Olsen were twin sisters born to Davis Olsen and Jarnette Fuller in Sherman Oaks, California. They are renowned actresses and fashion designers. They debuted as infants on the television series Full House. The sisters have appeared together in many films and TV shows during their teenage. They owned a company, Dualstar, which was very successful. Through this company, they rose at an early age to the rank of the wealthiest women in the entertainment industry.

10. The Mirabel Sisters

The Hermanas Mirabel were four sisters commonly known as Patria (born on February 27,1924), Dede (born on March 1,1925), Minerva (born on, March 12, 1926) and Maria Teresa (born on October 15, 1935). They were rebels and opposed the dictator Rafael Trujillo. Three of them were assassinated on November 25, 1960. They were recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999. In their honor, the United Nations General Assembly designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Conclusion:

Sisters are different units of a common origin; therefore, sisterhood is a natural union and an embodiment of synergism. On account of their being different units, the link is sometimes weakened by rivalry, caused by the desire to preserve individuality and unique identity. Although in most cases, the sisters worked to earn their fame, in a few cases fame approached them, simply on account of their being who they were. An example is the famous twin daughters of the former US President George W. Bush.
