A movie is a story that comes alive on the silver screen. To some, watching a movie is a form of enjoyment while to others it becomes an escape from the realities of life, and yet some watch movies to simply see for themselves the mistakes committed by the filmmakers. A movie, like life, is not perfect. Here is a list of ten movies famous for their mistakes:

1. Titanic (1997)

Titanic (1997)
Titanic (1997)

When this movie was shown in theatres all over the world, it broke box office records. It catapulted its lead stars, Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslet, into another level of stardom in Hollywood. Although the movie tugged at the hearts of hopeless romantics, making it one of the best-loved movies of all time, critics were quick to point out many mistakes seen in the movie. Examples are:

When the lead, female character, Rose, tried to rescue the lead, male character, Jack, from his handcuffs, she broke the glass case of a fire axe and grabs the axe. However, in the next shot, Rose was seen standing in front of the same glass case she broke, and lo and behold, the glass was intact.

A factual error that was included in the script of the movie was when Rose cited the works of Sigmund Freud about the male preoccupation with size when she was speaking with Bruce. Freud’s works were only published in the 1920’s, and most of his data were based on female subjects.

The mistakes cited for this film totaled 257. Quite a lot for a 194-minute film, and yet it garnered so many accolades.

2. Mean Girls (2004)

 Mean Girls (2004)
Mean Girls (2004)

This 2004 movie starring Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried was about a teenage girl who lived most of her life in the African jungle thanks to her zoologist parents. She thought the jungle has taught her how to deal about life, but high school turned out to be another type of jungle which she found out she was not used to.  This film released in 2004 has on record 63 mistakes, and here are some of them:

In one scene of the movie, the lead character, Cady’s father, was shown holding up a Burmese Python. Remember the setting was in Africa, and this Python specie is not to be found in Africa.

Another factual error was when Cady was competing against Kraft in a contest. The answer that Kraft gave was said to be incorrect when, in reality, the answer was correct.

3. Star Wars (1977)

Star Wars (1977)

Anyone born during the 1970’s simply loves Star Wars. It was then no wonder that although this film has 270 mistakes, many are still going gaga over this film. It is already considered a classic, and Star Wars’ fans would fight tooth and nail to defend this movie. Some of the mistakes in this 1977 film are:

A mistake in continuity is inevitable, and in this scene wherein C3PO was seen in the conveyor belt of the Jawas vehicle, members of the film crew were seen reflected on his head.

Maybe the post-editing technology back in 1977 was not as good as it is today, but in this scene wherein Luke Skywalker and C3PO were outside looking for R2D2, a droid is seen passing in front of them with the ropes that pulled it.

4. Twilight (2008)

Twilight (2008)
Twilight (2008)

This first installment of the Twilight series had everyone swooning over Edward and Bella. This is a love story between the male vampire Edward and the mortal Bella. Bella, it seemed, was very attractive to the vampires, not so much because she was pretty, but the smell of her blood made them go crazy. This movie has a record of 122 mistakes that fans would not have the time to look for. All they know is that Edward and Bella are in love, and they would defy everything just to be together.

It is quite a wonder how these artists keep themselves clean even if the scene calls for some dirt on their white garments. In the baseball scene, one of the characters, Rosalie, slides home, and her white pants got dirty. But in the next shot, it was visibly seen that her pants were as white as snow.

Not only are the garments kept clean but also the vehicles. In the scene wherein they leave after the baseball game, Emmet’s Jeep was seen to be very dirty with mud, and later on it becomes squeaky clean.

5. Gladiator (2000)

Gladiator (2000)

A movie that was supposed to have happened during Biblical times, the official language in Rome was Latin. But in a scene when the Roman soldiers were sent to burn down Maximus’ house and kill his family, his son spoke in fluent Italian.

Another factual error in the movie was in a scene leading to a fight in Rome, leaflets were being handed out when, at that time, notices were written on boards and not on paper.

6. The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

This classic children’s tale turned movie was about an orphaned little girl name Dorothy who lived with her uncle and his wife on a farm in Kansas.  In a freakish storm, Dorothy and her dog Toto were swept away in a tornado that brought them to the land of Oz. This classic film registered 310 mistakes which could be given a little more leeway given the fact that the film was made in the 1930’s, and film technology was not as technically advanced as it is today.

It seems that the movie industry has been, from the start, plagued with the ‘dirty clothes getting clean syndrome.’ In a scene wherein Dorothy fell into a pig pen, one would assume that naturally her clothes would be smeared with mud. But lo and behold, when she was rescued by Bert Lahr, her clothes were very clean.

In the scene where the Tin Man broke the flowerpot, the lines of the cracks where the pot would break into pieces were visible.

7. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Who would forget the Hobbits who were thrown into such a mess without their asking and eventually saved the middle kingdom? As in any epic movie, the complexities of the cinematography and the special effects cannot make it a mistake-free movie. This movie has for its name a total of 263 mistakes.

In a scene wherein Aragorn was head-butted by Lurtz, one could easily see that his mouth was bloodied. However, the next scene, the blood on his mouth completely disappears.

The case of the shoes changing colors. When Gandalf appears at Bilbo’s front door, he was wearing light-brown colored shoes, but when he stepped inside, they became grey.

8. Halloween (2007)

Most horror movies have a lot of mistakes in them, but no one really takes notice of it because the real concern for a moviegoer when watching this type of movie is if they would be scared at all.  This movie has less than 100 mistakes, 61 to be exact.

The story was shot in location at Haddonfield, IL, but noticeably the license plates of the cars in the movie all had California plates on them.

From wet to dry. In a scene where Laurie was walking home, the sidewalk transformed from wet to dry in a couple of seconds or minutes.

9. Casino Royale (2006)

A James Bond movie is without any mistakes. The fact that this secret agent gives his real name to everyone is already one, big mistake, and the stunts are simply amazing. But come to think of it, are they really feasible? James Bond is considered an icon, and each film installment is highly anticipated. So the mistakes aren’t really an issue, especially to fans.

The dead being undead in a scene in the Miami airport wherein a terrorist killed a truck driver. Being dead, he should be still and not move anymore, but in-between shots, the dead driver’s head also keeps on moving.

In the scene wherein our hero, James Bond, was typing his resignation letter, he was wearing an Omega Planet Ocean watch. But when he finished typing and closed his laptop, his watch has become an Omega Seamaster watch.

10. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

The seemingly dimwitted but actually witty Captain Jack Sparrow goes on a quest with Will Turner to rescue the maiden Elizabeth Swan kidnapped by the crew of the cursed ship The Black Pearl. Johnny Depp, who played Captain Jack Sparrow, really made this character his own. The viewer could imagine seeing somebody else play this captain. Unfortunately, as much as Johnny Depp gave such a wonderful performance, again post-production wove its magic and there were still mistakes seen in the movie. The total mistakes for this movie are 246.

Travel back in time. In the scene where Will Turner delivered the sword to Governor Swan, the time on the clock while he was waiting was 9:45 a.m., but when the good governors came in, the clock read 9:40 a.m.

Another case of a time traveler, this time leaving behind a painting. Still in the scene when Will delivered the sword at the Swan mansion, the oval painting behind the governor is a painting made by Thomas Kinkade, a modern-day artist. Given the time frame of the movie, Thomas Kinkade must have traveled back in time and presented the governor with his painting to furnish his home.
