Famous Leaders Who Led by Example

Leaders are instruments of change and renewal. They unify voices from their people to achieve a firmer solution to problems that divide the group thus producing conflicts. A good leader is ready to sacrifice his own decisions just to satisfy his people’s voices. He sets a good example to them, and his life shall inspire many.

Throughout the history of the world, leaders have been agents of change and had been warriors of improving humanity.  Some were military in nature and engaged themselves in politics while some were just ordinary ones who gathered the voices of their people, unified each of them, and stood firm against all odds while resolving general conflicts. They usually have exceptional visions and wide dreams for their people. Having that ability to enthuse and to inspire many, they shaped each nation thus creating history into a very colorful one for which shall be cherished forever. Here are some of the world’s greatest leaders who, in their own ways, transformed the face of our ugly world.

1. Martin Luther King Jr.

This young man inspired many, especially those who were victims of racial discrimination and those who were deprived of their rights to receive fair treatment in their society. He was known to be an agent of justice and equality. He was the former active leader of a Civil Rights Movement in America. He also established the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during his career as a leader there. He fought racial discrimination without any traces of blood, peaceful as it was, and had received the Nobel Prize for Peace at the youthful age of 35. Today, he is known to be the youngest leader who received such an honor. He was also opposing the Vietnam War while highlighting a religious perspective to his struggles for poverty. For such reasons, perhaps, he was assassinated by unknown men while relaxing on a balcony at the Lorraine Motel. That incident caused a great wave of insurgence across many cities in America. Today, his having been active in the Civil Rights Movement highlighted his fame and is honored by the world for being an instrument of fairness, justice, and equity.

He is better known as the Indian instrument for justice and national independence. This man who is proclaimed as a prominent figure in today’s era had been a leader and a founder of Satyagraha, a movement whose prime objective is to eradicate prejudice and inequality in his country. The way of his revolution was non-violent, and the movement did not use armed forces to fulfill its mission. He was also known to be the first leader ever in history to build principles for a non- violent way of fighting.  He spent his life simply and truthfully while maintaining a profound way of thinking and while building rich principles in life that inspired a great section of the world. He was also an essential instrument to the culmination of ‘untouchability,’ an Indian social system whose concepts are against justice and equality. His death was January 30th, 1948 after his assassination. Today, in honor of his deeds, the world is celebrating International Day of Non-violence on the day when he was born.

Though famous for being a dictator and having been an instrument for the beginning of a turbulent life in Europe and the world, this leader had exceptional skills in handling his men and had influenced a large section of the world. He is famous for his harsh, cruel, and ruthless form of running the German government and was the one who established the Nazi Party, the reason why the so-acknowledged today Holocaust exists. He was formerly an aspiring artist, but after meeting a series of difficulties for finding a job, he decided to join the Nazi Party and thus became a leader for having  exceptional skills in public speaking. He was also believed by many Germans to be the national instrument to regain its prosperity. He was a chief promoter of racism against Jews and those people who were unable to work. During his leadership the outbreak for World War II began. It claimed more than 6 million deaths including one-third of the Jews’ population in the world. After the invasion of the Red Army into Berlin, Hitler felt terrible and perhaps found a solution to his series of defeats ”œ suicide. He is known for his quote, ‘What luck for rulers that men do not think,’ that he took advantage of during his regime.

She was Franklin Roosevelt’s fifth cousin and wife. She became the First lady of the U.S. in 1933 and was a good wife, adviser, and effective motivator to Franklin Roosevelt especially during his health difficulties in life. Her effective encouragement made the President come back to politics and serve the country again. She was working on educational reforms and was a supporter to a women’s movement against suffrage and injustice. She also introduced African-American reforms which uplifted the lives of the Negroes. Later, after the final term of her husband, she served in the UN’s Human Rights Campaign. She also established the Human Rights Universal Declaration which opened the gates of hope for many. Her death was on November 7, 1962 which marked the meaningful loss of a woman of prominence.

5. Mao Zedong

He established the People’s Republic of China and was a known strategist for Chinese Communist revolutionary guerilla after being inspired by the Russian government system. He was also a Marxist and a leader to many of the most notable Chinese revolutions in history. He held the total control of the country until 1976, which was the same year of his death. He introduced important concepts of Communism and offered essential contributions to Marxism-Leninism together with his military teachings and unique brand of government strategies. His works gave rise to Maoism, a political theory of Mao Zedong.

He was a former American president and was an essential instrument for shaping the American political philosophy. He was also a writer with brilliant skills in public speaking which qualified him to claim the presidential seat of the country. His short term highlights the introduction of a more powerful philosophy of American politics, and he was later considered to be one of the best legal thinkers of the nation. He was the author of a well-known document, the ‘Declaration of Independence’ which highlighted different concepts about politics. Today, his magnificent speeches were compiled to equate his name with fame.

7. Abraham Lincoln

It was during his rule when the nation faced the most devastating war in national history. Prior to the war, he was a lawyer and a candidate for the Senate against Stephen Douglas in 1858. Unfortunately, he was not successful for a Senate position. However, his debates during the campaign shaped and built his reputation and secured a place for him in the Republican party’s nomination. He then claimed the title for being the nation’s 16th President and was considered by many historians to be the greatest U.S. leader after his successful control during the Civil War. His speeches held the record of being the shortest ever in U.S. history while successfully delivering an effective message to his listeners.

8. Winston Churchill

He is known to be a leader whom everybody shall gaze at. He was a British Prime Minister, a creative writer, an artist, and a public speaker who offered essential contributions to the victory of the Allies during World War II. He was also considered to be the hero of World War II who brought the terrible life in Europe to an end. He, together with the Allies, successfully defeated Hitler who ran the cruel Nazi movement which led to another dark period in the world. Aside from his successful politics career, he also gained a victory in literature after being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953 for his accurate description of history while highlighting values of humanity.

9. Mikhail Gorbachev

He was the last leader of the Soviet Union and successfully brought the Cold War across European countries to an end. He was the promoter of a Communist Party and soon became its leader after the death of Chernenko, its former leader, in 1985. Gorbachev’s prime vision is to run a massive campaign against alcoholism and corruption. He also changed the foreign policy of the Soviet Union and signed a treaty to abolish INF or the Immediate Nuclear Forces after meeting U.S. President Ronald Reagan. He also declared that the country would no longer interfere with any economic activities in Eastern Europe and finally announced the freedom of Afghanistan. For such heroic actions, he received the Nobel Peace Award in 1990.

He was the greatest Roman leader during the Middle Ages and was one of the members of the Nine Worthies, a group encapsulating other leaders who possessed ideal characters of chivalry. His contributions to the gradual change of the Roman Republic to an empire made this leader truly remarkable. He invaded Britain and some neighboring countries of Eastern Europe which extended the Roman Empire during early 53 BC. His achievements defined his unparalleled bravery and military power.

Truly, there have been so many leaders who managed to change the face of our world as it is today. We are the recipients of the previous series of continuous battles due to inevitable international conflicts. The fact is that we are more fortunate today as freedom is absolutely free and that each of us is endowed on the day of our birth with human rights, absolute freedom, and minimal racial discrimination. It is our duty to thank these people who offered large contributions to the fulfillment and success they offered which we, the more modern people, are currently enjoying. Their names are truly reserved for fame.
