Famous Festivals Around the World

The word, ‘festival’ has been derived from the Latin root ‘festivalis,’ meaning ‘holy,’ and it was originally used for the feasting occasions or celebration of some holy and religious nature. Christmas, Eid, Holy, Halloween, Nowruz and similar other religious festivals had been observed since the origin of the respective religions. In the Spanish and Filipino cultures, the word, ‘fiesta’ was more in use for feasts of a religious nature. Festivals were, however, not restricted to religious events only but also included events like New Year’s, change of the seasons, remembrance of some historical event, or  memory of some great persons. Presently, the term ‘festival’ applies predominantly to the celebrations relating to the cultural aspects of a community. A festival is to a community what a thread is to the beads of a rosary. Festivals bring together people of a common interest, ethnicity, geographical location, historical background, thinking, or those sharing a common environment.

Carnivale-Rio de Janeiro is the biggest carnival, a festival held every year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil before Lent, the Christian season of fasting. The festival started in 1723 and is celebrated until now regularly. During the festival, the streets of Rio de Janeiro are filled with more than two million people. The salient features of the festival include the merry-making crowd, enjoying the typical Rio carnival parade and floats from various Samba schools. A samba school is a group of neighbors or like-minded people who want to attend the carnival together.

Conclusion:

For a festival to be observed, big reasons are not a prerequisite. The time of sowing yams or cassava, harvesting the wheat crop, the advent of the monsoon or even a get-together of redheads, gays, or even a group of those who just want to run for fun would constitute a sufficient reason for organizing a festival. Festivals are distinguished from sports in that unity and enjoyment predominate the festivals while the will to excel is quintessential to sports. Just as the Parisian marathon is for fun,  an Olympic race is a severe competition.

Nice choices! I am a big fan of festivals and now I see there is so much more to experience. As for a Canadian, the next step for me is the Montreal Jazz Festival, the best one in the world as you describe it and The Vancouver International Jazz Festival you didn´t include, but as it is so close to my hometown, I probably shouldn´t miss that one. The next ones on the list will probably be sunny Pamplona and the typical Oktoberfest for me.
