Interesting facts about Everest

Recorded as the highest peak in the earth ‘“ Mt. Everest stands tall mesmerizing people for centuries all over the globe. The location of the mountain also serves as a strategic boundary behind Nepal and Tibet.

With an altitude level of 29,029 feet, Everest ‘“ also known as ‘˜Sagarmatha’ which is one of the most revered mountain ‘“ acting as a mother to the people of Nepal and a center of expedition by climbers. Every year many travellers ‘“ casual and serious travel this region to try catch glimpse of the mountain or with a strong intention to reach the top of the world. For a mountain lover, a view of Everest is spectacular and it probably lies in the wildest dream to take a look at this gorgeous mountain at least for once in a lifetime. Much to its beauty the mountain is also reputed to take fierce turn when it comes to abrupt change of weather, low oxygen availability, storm and deadly avalanche that sometimes bring serious unforeseen casualty near Everest, including death.

In general common people are aware of some generic information involving Mt. Everest. But there are various facts which are probably not known by all of us. So here lies a list of some interesting facts about the world’s tallest mountain:

  • Mountaineers usually follow typical route as established earlier and thus it is important to know there are two routes to reach the peak: One from the South-east Ridgei.e. from Nepal and another from China i.e. the North Ridge.

  • The duo – Tensing Norgay and Edmund Hillary was considered the first successful climber to reach summit. However it is interesting to note that this is not the first attempt by Norgay. He in fact attempted to reach the peak for six times earlier but unfortunately those attempts were a failure.

  • The constant change of weather which risks the mountaineer on-and-often is very well known. Important to note, the wind when goes rough can end up with a speed of 200 mph.

  • It is seen that at least one out of ten climbers faced death during their perilous journey.

  • Till date officials and eyewitness have recorded at least one hundred twenty mountaineers lying dead in different parts of the mountain ‘“ frozen and physically metamorphosed with sands of time;

  • As the Nepalese considers Everest as Sagarmatha(Goddess of sky), the Tibetan people refers it as Chomolungma(Goddess of Universe);

  • Women’s are not left behind when it comes to a nerve-racking expedition. Junko Tabei in the year 1975 successfully reached summit becoming the first Japanese lady to reach the top of the earth;

  • Just after Everest Base Camp starts the Khumbu glacier ‘“ one of the most toughest trail that a climber has to succeed to fulfill the dreams of reaching the summit;

  • Some of the major reasons for death while climbing are thin oxygen, frequent avalanche, cold and even from fall;

  • Sherpa’s are born climbers. A recent research stated that Sherpa’s are genetically adapted to the presence of high altitude and living in that area;

  • The bitter cold weather in the high altitude often proves fatal at times as the temperature may drop below sixty degree Celsius;

Lot has been said about Everest but still more mysteries remain and mountain lovers aim to find more information about this mysterious landscape. Nevertheless the spirit to conquer the mighty Everest will not die-down.Despite frequent deaths and imminent danger many climbers’ flocks in Nepal every year just to try their luck stepping at the top of the world.
