UC Berkeley or the University of California, Berkeley was found in 1866. Initially the campus was allocated for the Private College of California but following its merging with the Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College run by the state, University of California was formed in the campus of Oakland. In 1873, the UC campus was relocated to where it stands today, Berkeley.

According to the rankings provided by the National Research Council, among 212 doctoral programmes offered by various universities in the US, 48 of the programmes at Berkeley rank among the top 10.

UC Berkeley has many awards and achievements to boast of, some of which include 32 MacArthur Fellows, 4 Pulitzer Prize winners from among the faculty and 7 Nobel Laureates.

Rosa L. Scrivner is recorded to be the first woman to graduate from UC Berkeley. She went on to obtain a Ph.D degree in Agriculture.

M.E Jaffe from UC Berkeley was the first professor in the field of Nutrition who went on to make many positive contributions in this area including the theories of the negative role of cholesterol in the body, role of vitamins and minerals in the body etc.

A scholar and professor of UC Berkeley in the field of biochemistry Professor Herbert M. Evans made a contribution along with Dr. Katharine S. Bishop that led to the discovery of Vitamin E in 1922.

Berkeley was well-known for its cutting edge performance and research in the field of Nuclear Physics. UC was therefore involved in the development of the Atomic Bomb during the Second World War with operations that took place at the government library in Los Alamos in New Mexico.
The first cyclotron to be ever designed that made a considerable impact in the field of particle physics was done by Ernest O. Lawrence, scholar of UC Berkeley in 1931. Other famous discoveries include the discovery of many new isotopes and its role in the field of biological and medical sciences.

In 1954 the Polio Virus was first crystallised. It was made possible in the laboratories of UC Berkeley.

Apart from the amazing contributions made in the field of scientific discovery and research, eminent scholars from the professional fields too have made ample contributions to UC Berkeley. For example the first Mongolian to English and Thai-English dictionaries were compiled here. Translation of languages using computers, contributions in the field of legal research, criminology, optometry and engineering have also taken place in UC Berkeley.

The campus of UC Berkeley stretches over a sprawling 1232 acres of land with many parks and academic buildings. Located eastward on a range of steep hills, the campus offers a beautiful view overlooking the city of San Francisco and the famous Golden Gate Bridge.

In the years 1903 to 1924, over 20 buildings had been designed by Architect John Galen Howard that has stood the test of time and continue to be a part of the core campus till date.

The Greek Theatre built by the same architect John Galen Howard in 1903 has a seating capacity of 7200 audiences.

Sather Tower and Sather Gate are the two most important landmarks of UC Berkeley known to have been modelled after the famous tower of Venice.
