Facts About Xavier University

The Jesuit tradition of education stems back 450 years to a rich history of Jesuit heritage.  Globally, Jesuit educational institutions, named after Francis Xavier, have been committed to academic excellence and the building of all-around students fostering a life of serving society, and to be a success in today’s society.

Fact 1.  Francis Xavier was born in 1506 in Spain and was considered a close friend of St. Ignatius Loyola who was the original founding member of the Society of Jesus.

Fact 2.  Francis Xavier is considered one of the greatest missionaries in Christian history.  St. Xavier has conducted an estimated 30,000 baptisms.

Fact 3. St. Xavier’s missionary work took him around the globe.  His travels took him from Rome to Lisbon and then to India.  Throughout his journeys, he established many missions in Africa, India, Japan, and southeast Asia.  He was responsible for setting up educational establishments in Mozambique, Kenya, Socotra, and Goa.

Fact 4.  Xavier University is a private, coeducational university founded in 1831.

Fact 5.  Xavier University is the third largest independent institution in Ohio.

Fact 6. Xavier University is the 4th oldest of the 28 Jesuit institutions of higher education in the United States.

Fact 7. Xavier University is the sixth oldest Catholic university in the U.S. and the first Catholic institution of higher education in the Northwest Territory.

Fact 8.  The core values of Xavier University are: academic excellence, Ignatian tradition, and integrity.

Fact 9. Pulitzer Prize winner Jack Miles was from Xavier University.  Other notables include: Charles Geschke, founder of Adobe Systems, John Boehner the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 112th and 113th Congresses.

Fact 10. Xavier University is one of the top-ranking universities for a Master’s program.
