Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born on 28 December 1856 in Staunton, VA, USA.He was the twenty-third president of the United States and founder of League of Nation. He died on 3 February 1924, Washington, USA.

Fact 1:

Wilson won a Nobel Prize in 1920 as a leading architect behind the League of Nation. The major purpose of this league was to guarantee peace after millions of people were killed in the First World War in 1914.

Fact 2:

He was a devoted scholar and an impassioned orator. He had various degrees before he started his university career.

Fact 3:

He held the office of governor of New Jersey for two years before he finally became president of US in 1912. During his second term as president he extended voting rights to women. This was passed under the 19th amendment.

Fact 4:  

Woodrow also crafted the ‘œFourteen Points’ of the Versailles Treaty. The formation of League of Nation was one of the major highlight of the Fourteen Points.

Woodrow Wilson was brought up in a very intellectual and righteous home environment He was the third of four children in his house. His family had a Scottish background. ‘˜Tommy’ was his nickname when he was young.

Fact 6:

Wilson received his Ph.D. in political science and history from John Hopkins University. It is known that he was the first president to receive a PhD degree.

Fact 7:

His dream job was to become a professor at Princeton which he finally achieved in 1890. He was the most popular teacher of the campus due to his caring attitude and high visions. It was all because of Woodrow’s hard work and effort that New Jersey College evolved into the esteemed Princeton University.

Fact 8:

He suffered his first stroke while he was at Princeton in May 1906. He suffered his second stroke in October 1919.

Fact 9:

He was designated as the Democratic presidential candidate on the New Freedom (a name given to Wilson’s proposed reforms.) platform in 1912 largely due to his high political ambitions.  There were three main reforms under the New Freedom: Business reforms, Tariff reforms and Banking reforms. He presented these reforms during his election campaign speeches in 1912.

Fact 10:

Woodrow Wilson married twice. His first wife Ellen Louise Axson died in 1914. He had three daughters with her. Wilson then married Edith Bolling Galt during his first term as President.

Fact 11:

Wilson was the president at the time World War 1 and he tried his best to keep America out of the war. It is known that he won re election with the slogan ‘˜He kept us out of war’.

Fact 12:

Woodrow Wilson died on February 3, 1924 at the age of 67. He is buried in the Washington National Cathedral. Woodrow Wilson National fellowship Foundation and Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs are named after him in his honor.

Fact 13: He was the writer of two books; Biography of George Washington and History of American People.
