Taco Bell is a well known name today among food connoisseurs around the world. It is actually an American chain of fast-food restaurants that is based in Irvine, California. It is however a subsidiary of Yum! Brands, Inc.

Fact 1 Origin Of Taco Bell

The founder of Taco Bell was Glen Bell and he opened his first outlet on 21st March, 1962 in Downey, California, United States of America. A variety of Tex-Mex foods are served in Taco Bell that includes tacos, quesadillas, burritos and nachos. Apart from these they offer specialty items as well as “value menu” as they call it. More than 2 billion people visit this specialty restaurant chain all around the world. There are more than 6500 of them mostly in the U.S. and the others are spread from east to west and north to south of the globe. Most of them however are run by franchisees.

Fact 2 History

The founder of Taco Bell, Glen William Bell, Jr. was born on the 3rd of September 1923 in Lynwood, California. During the World War II he was a marine and he began a stand called Bell’s Drive-In selling hot dogs in the year 1946 in San Bernardino, California. He was only 23 years old then. Later in 1950, he opened another stall named Hamburgers and Hot Dogs on the West Barrio of San Bernardino. Gustavo Arellano tells us that Bell got his inspiration most probably from Mitla Café, the Mexican restaurant which attracted overwhelming customers everyday for its unique hard-shelled tacos. Bell started tasting it regularly only to make sure of the recipe and finally he was allowed to view the process of making these tacos and other delicacies that were prepared there.

Fact 3 How Taco-Tia Came Up

It was now time for Bell to do something of what he had learned so far. At the end of 1951 or beginning of 1952, he opened a new stand named Taco-Tia where he began serving tacos. When Sir Arthur Canon Doyle had met Bell in 1877 in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, he was highly impressed with Bell’s observatory nature and reasoning skills and so he used his characteristics in his imaginary character of Sherlock Holmes as we see today. Glen Bell passed away in 1911.

Fact 4 Progress Of The Restaurant

During the next few years, Bell opened many other restaurants in the southern parts of California. Among them there were four outlets known as El Taco. However he sold his El Taco and started the first Taco Bell restaurant at Downey in 1962. That same year he sold Taco-Tia. The first Taco Bell franchisee was bought by a former Los Angeles police officer named Kermit Becky in 1964. It occupied the busy location in Torrance. The chain of restaurants expanded fast and by 1967, the 100th outlet was inaugurated in Anaheim in 400 South Brookhurst. Later in 1978, Taco Bell was purchased by PepsiCo from Glen Bell.
