  • There exists little information about him.
  • He is believed to be a brave, gallant, and honorable soldier born in Syria at around 280AD. He actually joined the Roman army at the tender age of seventeen and was reckoned for his excellence in the force.
  • He was born and brought up by Christian parents. He thus grew up as a Christian and despite the fact that he served as a soldier under a non-religious empire ruled by Emperor Diocletian, he never betrayed his Christianity.
  • When the pleas for not killing Christians proved futile, he resulted into demonstrations against Christian prosecution in Rome.
  • Around 303 AD, the emperor started prosecuting Christians and Saint George took a front line to plead with the emperor to spare the Christians in vain. The leadership tried to force him to deny Christianity, but he was not shaken by the torture. He was executed near Lydda on 3rd April 303.
  • Today, St George is still celebrated in Bulgaria on May 6th by burning a whole lamb.
  • There is a mythical tale of him recovering thrice after being murdered.
  • There still exist controversial views on his position in the religious hierarchy. Pope Paul VI in 1969 demoted St George to an optional worship, but he was reinstated in 2000 by Pope John Paul II.
