Life depends on energy and the energy that is obtained from natural resources like sunlight, etc can be renewed or replenished by natural processes.

Fact 1 What Is Renewable Energy

Natural resources like wind, rain, sunlight, the tides and geothermal heat produce energy that is used in everyday life without which life on earth would have been impossible. These resources are absolutely natural and are therefore available all the time for which they are known as renewable energy resources. They are inexhaustible resources. Solar power, hydroelectricity, biomass, wind power and bio-fuels are some of the major sources of renewable energy.

Fact 2 Forms Of Renewable Energy

There are various forms of renewable energy that are used regularly for various uses.

  1. Sunlight is the main source of energy on the earth. Most of the other natural energy resources depend on the sun’s rays and heat like wind power or biomass.
  2. Wind energy is formed when the earth becomes heated and the air above it rises and winds are formed to take its place.
  3. Hydroelectric power also is directly dependent on sunlight and is renewable.
  4. Biomass energy is a form of stored energy in plants.
  5. Geothermal energy however does not depend on sunlight.
  6. Tidal energy is a form of gravitational energy.

Fact 3 Uses Of The Different Renewable Energy Resources

Renewable energy is used in various fields. They are:

  1. Solar energy is converted in many ways like solar water heaters, solar attic fans for cooling, sunlight that is directly converted to electrical energy and others.
  2. Wind energy, although dependent on the earth’s temperature, it is used for pumping water and generating electricity.
  3. Biomass energy is available from plants and are mostly used for domestic purposes like burning of trees to generate warmth especially during the winters and also for cooking.
  4. Geothermal power can be used to produce electricity only in limited areas. Earth energy is another type of geothermal energy and it can be used to heat or cool or maintain a comfortable temperature in buildings. But it cannot generate electricity.
  5. Energy generated from tides, hot hydrogen fusions and the oceans can be utilized to generate electricity.
  6. Hydroelectric energy and hydrogen and fuel cells are assisted by renewable energy like sunlight and water but they cannot be termed as renewable energy.

Fact 4 Unknown Facts About Renewable Energy

The concept of using renewable energy for various uses is not a new idea. People have used the forces of nature like sun, wind and rain to turn the blades of a windmill and wind turbine to produce electricity more than 2000 years ago.

The silicon found in sand has been used to produce different forms of power.

Vegetable oils and animal fats are fuels that are known as biodiesel generated from biomass.

Fact 5 Many Benefits Related To Renewable Energy

The sources of renewable energy are natural and are therefore cost-effective. The impacts of natural energy sources are found to be minimum or rather they do not have any impacts on global warming. With the increase in population the atmosphere is overloaded with harmful emissions involved in electricity production, coal-fired power plants, natural gas-fired power plants and other energy technologies. But it has been proved that most of the renewable energy resources do not cause global warming or cause any harmful effects on environment, health and the climate.

When electricity is generated from natural renewable energy there are greater health benefits as compared to fossil fuels and such others like:

  • Less of air pollution.
  • Reduction in premature mortality.
  • Healthcare expenses are lesser.
  • Water pollution is reduced greatly.
  • Emissions from biomass and geothermal energy resources are comparatively lower as compared to those emitted from power plants that are run on coal and gas.
