1. Pets are Domestic Animals
A pet is normally a domestic animal that is kept mainly to offer company and in rare cases, protection to a person. Unlike animals that are kept for working purposes such as horses that engage in sports, pets are characterized by attractive looks, playfulness and loyalty. Mostly, dogs and cats are the most preferred types of pets.

On the other hand, pets that live in industrial areas are highly vulnerable to obesity which might lead to the development of diabetes and kidney failure.

Some pets especially dogs and cats have been medically accepted to belong to the class of therapy animals. These kinds of therapy animals are trained to attain certain specific social, physical and mental objectives with patients.

5. Pets have Health Benefits
Research has supported that pets can offer health benefits especially to the elderly. Pets provide the company that people need to exercise with and someone to assist them through tough healing processes either from a psychologically disturbing past or physically. Pets also assist people in attaining certain health objectives while reducing mental stress.

6. Pets are used in Care Facilities
Pets that are found in care facilities such as nursing homes and sanatoriums assist patients with coping. Elderly people confined in homes do not get the opportunity for physical contact. Pets therefore, give them a chance to come into contact with other breathing creatures. Pets found in such homes are chosen according to their size and the population of a home or facility.

7. Pets can assist those with Disabilities
Some pets especially dogs have been known to assist people with disabilities. There are dogs known as guide dogs that are trained to assist those suffering from vision impairment. Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is a field that has trained dogs assisting in different types of disabilities.

8. Pets’ Popularity
In a survey undertaken in the United States in 2013, reports showed that pets had outnumbered the number of children in homes at a ratio of 4:1. Surveys have shown that there are about 78 million dogs and 86 million cats that are kept as pets in the United States alone.

9. “Raining Cats and Dogs” Pet Phrase
During the 17th century, very heavy thunderstorms and rainstorms were experienced in England. During this time, many animals especially cats and dogs were left homeless and many could be seen floating in water down the streets giving the impression that it had rained cats and dogs. This situation gave rise to the phrase “raining cats and dogs”.

10. Pet Shapes
Studies have proved that it is easier to establish how long a dog can live. Dogs that have an appearance of a pointed face that also seems to be sharp or those that resemble a wolf have been known to live longer. On the other hand, dogs with flat faces like bulldogs have a shorter life span.
