Michael Jackson, also known as “King of Pop” was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana. On June 25, 2009, he was found unresponsive in his home and was rushed to UCLA Medical Center; he was pronounced dead at the age of 50. Later his death was ruled a homicide, the result of ingesting a lethal amount of prescription drugs. He was a famous singer and entertainer.

Fact 1:    Between 1993 and 1994, as well as between 2004 and 2004, Michael Jackson was investigated by California law enforcement for possible child molestation. Jackson was acquitted of all such charges.

Fact 2:    Michael Jacksons career began when he was 11 years old as part of the group the “Jackson Five”; he was the youngest of the five brothers.

Fact 3:    Michael Jackson was also known for his charity work, particularly his work to help South African, he also composed and organized the production of the song “We Are the World”, with proceedings going to African aid.

Fact 4:    His blockbuster Thriller of 1982 became the biggest-selling album of all time and probably his best known accomplishment. Thriller stayed on the top charts for over two years, it spent 37 non-consecutive weeks at the number one spot, and it became the best-selling album of all time; it went on to sell 29 million copies in the U.S. and almost another 20 million overseas.

Fact 5:    He was the first black artist to find fame on MTV, breaking down countless boundaries both for his race and for the music video as an art form.

Fact 6:    Motown records began preparing Michael for a solo career in 1971, and his first single, “Got to Be There,” debuted toward the end of the year; it hit the Top Five list, along with the follow-up, a cover of Bobby Day’s “Rockin’ Robin.” Late in 1972, Jackson had his first number one solo single, called “Ben,” it was the title song from a children’s thriller about a young boy who befriends Ben, a highly intelligent leader of a gang of homicidal rats. The song was surprisingly genuine and emotional, and it even earned an Oscar nomination.

Fact 7:    Michael Jackson sealed his own phenomenon when he preformed his signature “moonwalk” dance step on May 16, 1983, on Motown’s televised 25th anniversary special. He admitted he did not invent the moonwalk, but it became as much of a Jackson signature as his vocal hiccups or single white-sequined glove.

Fact 8:    Michael Jackson won several awards, including a record eight Grammys in one night, he also caught the largest endorsement deal ever when he became a Pepsi spokesman. (He was burned in an accident while filming a commercial).

Fact 9:    He had several cosmetic surgeries, which let to accusations from the black society that he was intentionally trying to become whiter; a few years later, Jackson revealed that he had vitiligo, which was a disorder causing pigment to disappear from the skin, leaving large white blotches and makes direct sunlight very dangerous.

Fact 10:    Jackson decided to pursue his interest in film and video by working with George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola on the short 3-D film Captain Eo. The special-effects show was shown on the huge widescreen IMAX theaters in Disney’s amusement park for 12 years, starting in 1986.

Fact 11:    Jackson, claiming he got caught up in the moment came to the balcony of his hotel suite and briefly dangled his 11 month old son Prince Michael II over the edge with one arm. He apologized the next day but this really cemented the King of Pop’s public image as an out-of-control millionaire.
