Hammerhead sharks are some of the strangest looking animals on this Earth. They are called  hammerheads as their head has two extended lobes, and it looks like a hammer. There are nine species of this shark found all around the world. Here are some facts about Hammerhead sharks.

Fact 1: The length of a Hammerhead shark varies greatly. It can be as short as 3 feet and as long as 20 feet which depends on gender, age, and species. The Great Hammerhead shark weighs around 1,000 pounds.

Fact 2: Not just their head but many other features make them different from other sharks. For instance, their dorsal fin is extended, and their head is mallet shaped.

Fact 3: Hammerhead sharks love to live in warm waters, so they are found all around the world in tropical and temperate regions. They are found near the shores, and in the summers they migrate towards colder waters.

Fact 4: They live in large groups of 15 to 20 sharks which is unusual for sharks. These groups are called  schools. But they hunt alone at night while roaming in groups during the day. In some groups, 100s of sharks can also be seen.

Fact 5: The Hammerhead shark is a deep sea creature, and they are usually found at nearly 250 meters deep. They can travel at speeds of 25 miles per hour.

Fact 6: The eyes of Hammerheads are quite sharp, but other than that they have a special sensory organ which is called the ‘œampullae of Lorenzini.’ This organ helps them to detect the electric field around their prey, and they can catch small creatures like catfish, boxfish, and jacks.

Fact 7: They feed on a wide variety of sea creatures which include eagle rays, stingrays, octopuses, skates, shrimps, crabs, and butterfly rays.

Fact 8: Hammerhead sharks can locate a stingray even when it is hidden under the sand.

Fact 9: They can locate their prey with the help of sonar waves.

Fact 10: They don’t have mineralized bones; that is the reason we cannot find a fossilized shark.
