In 1492, Haiti was discovered by Christopher Columbus and afterwards it was colonized by the Spanish. Nevertheless, by gaining its independence from the Spanish, it became the first independent republic of black people. Haiti has an interesting geography as most of it is covered by mountains with other parts of the nation marked by small plains, great valleys and extensive plateaus.

Fact 1: The typical woman in Haiti will have more than 5 children because birth control services are not easily available and also because birth control is discouraged by the Catholic Church.

Fact 2: Most of the current citizens of Haiti are African descendants who were part of the slave trade that was practiced in the Caribbean in the earlier century.

Fact 3: Throughout the history of Haiti, it is estimated that the country was ruled by more than 50 dictators.

Fact 4: Apart from America, Haiti is the oldest independent country in the West but yet it is still highly undeveloped with a very high poverty and unemployment rate.

Fact 5: After Cuba and Dominican Republic, Haiti is considered the 3rd largest country amongst Caribbean countries.

Fact 6: The government of Haiti recently recognized Voodoo as a valid state religion together with Catholicism.

Fact 7: There are no trains in Haiti because of the absence of railroad. In the towns, people usually use communal taxis or multi-colored public buses for transport.

Fact 8: Very few people in Haiti own vehicles. The actual number of car owners is listed as less than 5 people out of 1000.

Fact 9: There is a single public university in Haiti that was established in 1944. Many wealthy students go to colleges outside of the country.

Fact 10: On average, 45% of children go to school regularly with girls attending only 2 years of school.
