Facts About Fossil Fuels

Fossil fuels consist of three kinds. These are: coal, natural gas, and oil. These are naturally formed out of the decomposition of organisms’ remains after several million years. Fossil fuels are also the prime source of energy in the world.

Fact 1: Fossil fuels are not that easy to replenish once consumed. Because they usually take about a million years to be formed, they are already depleted before they can be replenished.

Fact 2: The coal supply is expected to last for 1500 years based on the current consumption. However, if the consumption increases by 5%, it is now expected to last for only 86 years. The use of coal would soon also increase as soon as other kinds of fossil fuels are depleted.

Fact 3: Coal could be gasified into something like synthetic natural gas. It could also be liquefied into synthetic crude oil.

Fact 4: Fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas have long been on Earth even before the humans evolved. However, humans never used these fossil fuels until the latter part of the 19th century and still did not consume much of them then.

Fact 5: In 1997, the fossil fuel consumption is averaged to have equaled the decomposition of every plant on Earth, land and sea 422 years ago.

Fact 6: A liter of gasoline is equal to the decomposition  of 23.5 tons of organisms that were deposited in the ocean in ancient times.

Fact 7: The burning of fossil fuels is believed to have damaged the Earth and caused the climate change and global warming that we are experiencing now.

Fact 8: A 100-watt light bulb turned on for 24 hours consumes about 325 kgs of coal from a power plant in a year.

Fact 9: Our energy consumption is provided by coal at 28 percent, natural gas at 40 percent, and crude oil at 20 percent, and the remaining 12 percent is provided by renewable energy sources.

Fact 10: The use of a more advanced refining technology has made it possible to produce 21 gallons of gasoline from 42 gallons of crude oil as compared with the earlier times when only 11 gallons of gasoline were produced out of it.
