FACTS ABOUT DIABETES

Fact 1: Nearly 6.4 percent of the adult population in the world, which is estimated to be around 285 million people, were known to have diabetes in the year 2010. The diabetic population will increase in number to 438 million by the year 2030. The 438 million people are estimated to be comprised of nearly 7.8 percent of the adult population in the world.

Fact 2: Diabetes is prevalent in 6.4 percent of people in the entire world. About 10.2 percent of people had diabetes in the Western Pacific while 3.8 percent of people had diabetes in the African region.

Fact 3: Among the current diabetes cases, 70 percent are present in low-income and middle-income countries. India is estimated to have the largest diabetic population of 50.8 million. China is second to India in its diabetic population which is 43.2 million.

Fact 4: Current statistics say that the age group affected by diabetes is in the range of those 40 to 59 years of age. By the year 2030, this age group is predicted to change to 60 to 79 years.

Fact 5: The major cause of premature illness and death is considered to be diabetes.

Fact 6: Diabetes can remain undetected for a long time without giving out any symptoms.

Fact 7: Diabetes can create serious consequences as it is a chronic condition. But, with careful monitoring, like bringing changes in the lifestyle, controlling the blood sugar levels, and using proper medications can inhibit many problems related to the disease.

Fact 8: Diabetes is the disease condition where the body does not produce enough insulin which is necessary for converting sugars and starches into energy.

Fact 9: The exact cause of diabetes has not been determined. The genetic factors and environmental factors are a few of the reasons for diabetes. The lack of exercise and obesity are some of the  primary reasons for causing diabetes.

Fact 10: Type-2 diabetes is observed in about 85 to 95 percent of people suffering from diabetes in high-income countries. In the case of low- and middle-income countries, the percentage is greater.
