The month of December is the last month of the year. It is Christmas time and the best time for fun and enjoyment. Initially according to Roman calendar, December used to be the tenth month of the Roman year. But after the months of January and February were included December became the last month of a year of twelve months according to the Gregorian calendar.

The month of December got its name from Middle English, and comes from the Latin word “decem” which means ten for it was the tenth month for the Romans which began in March. The winter days following December were not included in any one the months. Later, January and February were introduced out of month less periods and were added at the beginning of the calendar, but the name of December was not changed. Anglo-Saxons called it Winter Monath or Yule Monath because of the custom of burning the Yule log during this time. However, when the Anglo-Saxons became Christians, they called it Heligh Monath meaning Holy Month because Christmas, the birth of Lord Jesus Christ is celebrated in this month. December is very much associated with Christmas all over the world.

It is the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere. It is called Summer Solstice and it is the longest day of the year.
