1. Adidas was originally a family business
Adidas was first established in 1948 by Adolf “Adi” Dassler as a family business known as Gebrüder Dassler Sportschuhfabrik. It was owned by Adolf and his brother Rudolf. After World War II, these brothers had a fight and Rudolf left the family business to start his factory which he named Puma. Adolf then changed the family business to Adidas. ‘Adi’ was his first name and “das” were the first three letters of his name.

2. Adidas is the biggest sportswear brand in Europe
Adidas is ranked the biggest sportswear brand across Europe and the second-largest in the world after the American rival brand, Nike.

3. Adidas sportwear are in 200 plus countries
Adidas products sell in over two hundred countries. In 1994 alone, Adidas sales totaled 3 billion dollars. Adidas posted 40% increase in net sales in 1997. For the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing, China Adidas spent over 70 million Euros in sponsoring the event. Adidas revenue for 2009 listed 10.38 billion Euros. In 2011, Adidas produced more than 245 million pairs of shoes. The Adidas Empire is worth an estimated 15 billion dollars.

4. Adolf designed the Adidas logo
The Adidas “three striped logos” was designed by its founder, Adolf Dassler. Throughout time, the company, logo has changed but has always incorporated the three stripes. The current logo incorporates three slanted stripes in a triangular shape. This recent logo symbolizes a mountain, a metaphor for the challenges and perceivable goals that athletes must meet and overcome.

5. The rift between Adidas and Puma
Adidas and Puma are two of the most popular sportswear manufacturers in the world. The brothers Adolf and Rudolf, who are founders of Adidas and Puma respectively, had a fight, and they never reconciled. The two brothers are buried in the same cemetery, but spaced as far as possible.

6. Adidas pioneered other brands in the industry
Adidas is the parent business to many others sportswear brands including Reebok and Rockport. In 1986, Rockport had plans to go public when the family decided to sell the company to a British athletic footwear firm, Reebok. Later on, Adidas purchased rival sportswear manufacturer “Reebok” in 2006 for an estimated 3.8 billion dollars.

7. Adidas uses partnership to drive change
Adidas considers partnership with other brands as crucial to driving active change in the industry. Adidas by Stella McCartney is a sports fashion line for women. In 2004, a top English fashion designer, Stella McCartney launched this joint-venture line with Adidas, creating a long-term partnership with the corporation. The National Hockey League also recently announced a seven-year partnership in which Adidas will become the authentic outfitter of on-ice uniforms as well as an official supplier of licensed apparel and headwear for the league starting the 2017-2018 seasons.

8. The Adidas myth
There is a city myth that the name Adidas is an acronym that stands for “All Day I Dream About Sports”. However, this is a false belief as the name Adidas resulted from parts of the founder’s name.

9. Adidas fears Nike competition
Adidas, which has for a long time dominated the market for soccer boots, shirts and balls, is facing a fierce challenge from Nike. In 2003, David Beckham signed the biggest athletic endorsement deal with Adidas for a cool 160.8 million dollars lifetime contract. However, Adidas feared its major rival brand Nike would snap the great deal away. However, Nike allegedly replaced Adidas as National Basketball Association kit sponsor in an exclusive eight-year deal worth more than 1 billion dollars.

10. Adidas offers diversified items
Adidas sells a variety of items. The primary items Adidas sells are shoes, apparel, and sports attire along with accessories such as hats, watches bags and other sports equipment. Adidas stock caters for male and women as well as all age groups.
